"Pietra dura" kommt aus dem Italienischen und bedeutet harter Stein. Es ist die Bezeichnung für ein aus verschiedenen, geschnittenen Steinen zusammengesetztes Mosaik. Seine Blütezeit erlebte die Technik in Florenz, Ende des 16. Jahrhunderts.
