"The Universal Conchologist, exhibiting The Figure of every known Shell accurately drawn and painted after Nature: with A New Systematic Arrangement by the author Thomas Martyn", London 1789. Buch über Muschelkunde, begonnen 1784 mit mehreren Jahren Entstehungszeit.Thomas Martyn kaufte 2/3 der Muschelbestände, die James Cook von seiner 3. Südseereise mitgebracht hatte und veröffentlichte diesen prachtvoll illustrierten Muschelkatalog. Für die Herstellung der Kupferstiche wurde eigens eine Akademie für Naturmalerei gegründet. Das Außergewöhnliche an diesem Naturkundewerk ist der stark reduzierte Text in Verbindung mit zahlreichen farbigen Detailabbildungen. Vorliegend die am häufigsten anzutreffende Form des Werks mit 2 Titelblättern, einer Widmung, einer Einführung, einer gestochenen Medaillentafel, 2 gestochene Tabellen sowie 80 handkolorierte Kupferstichtafeln, Text engl./franz. Mit Goldschnitt. Maße 29cm x 3,5cm x 35,5cm. Mit Alters-und Gebrauchsspuren, Bucheinband berieben, mit Knicken und Einriss, Seiten mit Verfärbungen, Verschmutzungen, Stockflecken, Seiten leicht wellig, einige Bleistiftnotizen.

Book on shellology, started in 1784 with several years of creation.Thomas Martyn bought 2/3 of the shell stocks that James Cook had brought back from his 3rd voyage to the South Seas and published this magnificently illustrated shell catalog. An academy for nature painting was founded especially for the production of the copper engravings. The unusual feature of this natural history work is the greatly reduced text in conjunction with numerous color detailed illustrations. Present the most common form of the work with 2 title pages, a dedication, an introduction, an engraved medallion plate, 2 engraved tables and 80 hand-colored copper engraved plates, text English/French. With gilt edges. Measures 29cm x 3,5cm x 35,5cm. With signs of age and usage, book cover rubbed, with creases and tear, pages with discoloration, soiling, foxing, pages slightly wavy, some pencil notes.
