| FONDERIA SOMMER "Antique copy of a standing figure of Narcissus".
Naples, 19th century, bronze, gold-coloured patina, inscribed "Fonderia Sommer Napoli", fully sculpted figure of Narcissus after an antique model on a low, round base, h: 65 cm. Signs of age, loose screws.
This standing figure of Narcissus comes from the workshop of Giorgio Sommer, born in Frankfurt am Main. He settled in Naples in 1857, initially with a photography studio, and opened a workshop there from the 1870s onwards, where he replicated antique works of art in bronze and terracotta. His work became quite widespread in the 19th century. The original, now in the Museo Nationale, Naples, was rediscovered in 1862 during an excavation in Pompeii.
